This case study explores how MP Moran, a family-run builders’ merchant operating across six sites in London and Watford, adopted The Pallet LOOP to transform pallet management.  The business lowered costs, improved yard organisation and increased operational efficiency while also reducing its environmental impact.

Prior to adoption, MP Moran branches stored both damaged and usable pallets until collection.  These were consolidated at the Watford branch, which served as a central hub, where external providers were paid to remove excess pallets.  While functional, this operational process incurred the ongoing costs associated with third-party services for pallet collection and removal and required manual coordination, leading to inefficiencies and missed recovery opportunities.

The Pallet LOOP provides a closed-loop pallet management system that replaces paid removal services with a model that incentivises pallet returns and simplifies collection logistics, turning pallet management from a cost centre to a value-adding activity, while supporting a circular economy.

MP Moran implemented The Pallet LOOP in its branches across their plaster & insulation product categories.  Integrating into their existing operational process, the LOOP pallets were collected, stored, and returned through the LOOP system, with the Watford branch continuing to function as a central hub to support coordination.  The financial reimbursement linked to pallet returns was paid directly back to each branch in their P&L, “a key driver in getting positive engagement,” said Purchasing Director, Martin Moran.

It was an easy process to transition”, said Martin.  “The payback has driven good operational behaviour across branches”.

The key drivers of its success included:

  • Financial Incentives: Branches benefited directly from the payback for returned pallets
  • Behavioural Change: The reimbursement model encouraged more disciplined pallet handling
  • Colleague Engagement: Operational teams, particularly branch staff, responded positively

Additionally, pallet collection times were improved, reducing from over 7 working days to significantly shorter turnaround times.

This led to a number of positive outcomes for MP Moran:

  • Cost Reduction: Lowered third-party removal costs while generating financial returns through pallet recovery
  • Operational Efficiency: Faster pallet collection times and improved yard organisation
  • Health & Safety Improvement: Better site management due to reduced pallet build-up
  • Employee Engagement: Positive behavioural change driven by financial incentives
  • Positive Environmental Impact: The Pallet LOOP estimates that for the >1,000 pallets MP Moran has put back into the “loop”, they have reduced their potential carbon footprint by ~1.3 tCO2e

Conclusion

MP Moran’s adoption of The Pallet LOOP demonstrates how clear operational and financial benefits were unlocked with minimal implementation challenges.  The system introduced a more structured and incentivised approach to pallet management, creating a more efficient, safer and sustainable pallet management system.

Asked what advice he would give to organisations looking to onboard The Pallet LOOP, Martin Moran gave these recommendations:

  • Dedicate specific yard space for LOOP pallets to streamline handling
  • Establish a central hub, where possible, to optimise collection and storage
  • Use incentives to drive behavioural change
  • Track performance through regular KPIs or reporting to promote internal engagement
